December 21, 2022. Woara Beba, Winneba: Level 400 Development Communication (DevComm) students and representatives of Development Communication Students Association (DevCommSA) of the African University College of Communications (AUCC) today donated used clothing, beverages and accessories worth GHC3,000 to support Woara Beba community this Christmas.
The items included bags of used clothes, shoes, drinks and water. They were received on behalf of the community by Mbrantsehene Nana Otuboa I.
Nana Otuboa “I thanked the students and their lecturers and Radio Peace for the love”.
This donation followed an annual field trip to the community on November 23, led by DevComm lecturer/Head of Department Emmanuel Essel designed to help students learn about the fishing community as part of participatory communication and field research.
The visit was facilitated by Francis Kobina Adu Aboagye alias Hon. Adu Agbomo, host of The Morning Show on Radio Peace 88.9 FM, Winneba.
Development communication is a specialization that teaches students the skills of facilitating a positive change through communication in society.
The donation was the students’ way of saying ‘thank you’ to Woara Beba this festive season.
Present at the donation were DevComm Class Representatives Noretha Dosu, James Bentil, and Lord Blankson, DevCommSA members Ruth Aryeh and Stephen Ofosu, accompanied by Head of Department for Development and Strategic Communication Emmanuel Essel, and Director for Ama Ata Aidoo Centre for Creative writing at AUCC Nana S. Achampong.
Woara Beba is a traditional coastal fishing village created about a century ago by the ancestors of the Chief Annobil Family of Winneba. It boasts breath-taking landscapes, including splendid beach view, peculiar vegetation and characteristic vernacular architecture which uses mud, straw, palm leaves, and mangrove branches. Fishing and fish smoking are principal livelihoods of the local people: while men fish, women smoke the fish and sell them.
